Mixtek & Mystics
with Amanda Sage, Carrie Ann Baade & Joe Bob Merritt
June 1-8, 2019
Location:
South Main Gunnison
Gunnison, Colorado
Class size: 15
Overview:
Join us for a 7 day journey into the realms of vision and manifestation. This is a unique opportunity to study painting and mysticism with Carrie Ann Baade, Amanda Sage and Joe Bob Merritt in a facility built for transformation. In this workshop we will follow two different but similar sequences of painting, both with roots dating back to the early renaissance. Mixtek refers to the Misch-technik which was revived by Ernst Fuchs in the 1950’s with roots in the early renaissance and currently in the midst of a new revival in the international visionary art scene.
During the intensive we will explore various uses and examples of materials through presentations, hands on experience and coaching. We will be working in charcoal, ink, acrylic, casein and oil.
Carrie Anne will share her approach to the “Bastard Misch” derived from Techniques of the Primitive Northern Renaissance, and how to apply the working methods of artists such as Memling, Van Eyck, and Dirik Bouts to our contemporary work.
Amanda and Joe Bob will take students through the mirror in a study of the self, offering alternative approaches to the development of a painting, while exposing layers of potential. (Advanced students may choose to work on a different subject).
Not only will we find ourselves within a space & place built to facilitate change in perspective, Joe Bob will share teaching ideas and insights gathered through his studies of the Fourth Way, Zen Buddhism and the Dictionary.
Great art-making needs movement and nourishment. We will have space to stretch, move, and dance on site at Sanctuary Somatic Arts Studio and healthy catering will be served up by local chefs.
There are no mistakes in Mixtek & Mystics. We find ourselves in service of the vision, rather than the seeking of the image. This workshop will offer a wide range of skills. We will ground in our being and we will soar through visionary realms. All levels of experience are welcome to join. We find that the spectrum of varying levels of experience brings great flavor to the group.

Biographies
Amanda Sage (born 1978 in Denver) is an artist using her painting as a tool for spiritual and planetary growth and transformation.
In 1997 she apprenticed for 2 years in classical painting techniques with Michael Fuchs in Vienna Austria. This led to becoming a painting assistant to Ernst Fuchs, founder of Fantastic Realism, for 10 years while developing her own style and portfolio as a resident artist at the culture house WUK in Vienna.
Since 2009 she has been based in Los Angeles and influential in networking artists and initiatives while hosting workshops, lecturing and exhibiting world wide. Her work is mostly in private collections with some pieces also in the permanent collection of the Kirkland Museum in Denver.
She is a co-founder of the Vienna Academy of Visionary Art and is on the board of directors of CoSM (Chapel of Sacred Mirrors) Alex & Allyson Grey’s art sanctuary in New York. She has also pioneered painting retreats in Eco-Villages such as Paradise One, Byron Bay Australia and PuntaMona, Costa Rica. When not traveling she can be found in one of her studios in Los Angeles, Vienna Austria or Gunnison Colorado.
Carrie Ann Baade (born 1974 in Louisiana) is a contemporary painter whose work quotes from, interacts with, and deeply relates to art history. She paints in dialogue with relevant masterpieces from Modern period to antiquity, in order to reclaim them in a surreal narrative that is simultaneously biographical. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries nationally and internationally, including exhibitions: the John and Mable Ringling Museum, the Delaware Contemporary, Billy Shire Fine Arts in Los Angeles, the Ningbo Art Museum in China, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Jacksonville, Florida. Carrie Ann Baade received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, studied at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy, and earned her MFA in Painting from the University of Delaware. Raised on the front range in Colorado, she now lives and works in Tallahassee, where she is an Associate Professor of Painting and Drawing at Florida State University. See more of her work HERE
Joe Bob Merritt (born 1969 in Texas) earned the degree of Bachelor of Environmental Design at Texas A&M University in 1991. He earned the degree of Master of Architecture at The Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-ARC) in 1996. He is particularly interested in the intersection of the visionary arts, mindfulness, and the creative process. He believes that art making provides one with innumerable opportunities to develop sensory clarity, strengthen concentration skills, and cultivate powers of equanimity. Joe Bob believes that the efforts that we as artists make in the cultivation of these skills contribute to the possibility of having direct experiences of freedom from mechanical conditioning and habitual re-actions, thus increasing the probability of intelligent, response-able, and creative activity in the midst of everyday life situations.
