Self Portrait Drawing Workshop

The journey of the self portrait is an initiation. An exploration of the self.
Each time we face our reflection we see deeper into the truth of the matter.
The truth of our mortality and the mystery that is this life.
What do we want? Who are we when look into the mirror?

In this workshop we will dive into a guided journey step by step into drawing our own portrait from a mirror.
We will learn composition and tricks in finding proportions.
We will study value, shading and basic principles in eye/hand coordination.
After we discover the basic form, we will explore the story of the avatars that we are.
What do you see?

Demo will be done in black & white charcoal on burnt sienna acrylic-toned watercolor paper,
taped to a board on an easel with a hand mirror tied to the easel right above the drawing
so the face does not have to move while drawing,
only the eyes will move from mirror to drawing.
It must be set up for the observation process to be made as easy as possible.

Recommended Materials

- Black charcoal
- White charcoal
- Eraser
- Toned paper (can be watercolor paper or mixed media paper that is toned with any color or mix of acrylics)

Materials that will also work:
- Graphite Pencil
- White Paper
- Pastels on toned paper
- Watercolor
- Acrylic or oil on canvas
