"As we push the boundaries of what can be, we draw in the visionary realms of infinite potential.”
Join us for the 3rd painting retreat at PuntaMona, a family-owned off-the-grid permaculture farm and educational retreat center on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. Dive into your imagination and learn tools for expressing it. Dive into the ocean and into the jungle, commune with nature as the senses are enriched by the experience of a thriving eco-system. Be inspired by community as we all bring the gift of our unique vision to share in a supportive environment.
Mixtek Mystics is a workshop series that Amanda Sage & Joe Bob Merritt offer a few times a year in unique destinations around the world. This iteration at PuntaMona will include the expertise of resident herbalist Souzie Boerema.
The Theme will be focused around healing and specifically the healing properties of 20+ local Medicinal Plants that grow at PuntaMona. We will collectively learn about these plants by each choosing one to adopt and study. Amanda will guide the class through a step by step process of developing the painting, as Joe Bob helps deepen our ability to see the truth of the fact of the matter through his talk on the Picture of Conditioned Man and individual consultations.
We will also learn about the properties of the plants as well as get an introduction to making infusions, decoctions, tinctures, vinegars and oils. Souzie will guide us on plant walks and offer a herbal self-care class. At the end of the retreat we will have a collection of visionary botanical paintings created by the class.
Each participant will be guided through the process of an acrylic painting, from start to finish, with a variety of exercises, demo’s and lectures throughout the week. Conceptually we will follow an in-direct painting method similar to the Mischtechnik which classically uses egg tempera and oil paint in glazes. Due to humidity and drying times we will use high pigmented fluid Golden acrylics instead and achieve similar results.
Amanda studied with Michael Fuchs as an apprentice for 2 years in Austria and then went on to be an assistant to Ernst Fuchs for 10 years. She has been painting in a similar method for over 20 years and has developed her own way of expressing and sharing it through over 10 years of teaching. Joe Bob Merritt integrates teaching ideas around the study of the self into the workshop that weave harmoniously with the study of painting. Based on his extensive study of the 4th Way and Zen Buddhism, his unique perspective offers tools for becoming a conscious human being. Together they guide students through the mirror on a transformational journey into themselves. They see themselves as a per-missionary’s in teaching, by supporting each student in expanding their tool belt of skills in basic drawing and painting skills, as well as getting deeper in touch with what they really want to express through their art.
“The most special part of our intensives is the collective magic that happens when like minded souls come together to create for a week.”
"Making Art is not something that is only limited to painting, drawing, sculpture… it is a WAY of life, a perspective, a lens through which we have the choice to live in this life."
