Announcement - 12.11th :

I can hardly believe that we are here... the time has truly flown by! The last round of Group Reviews was pretty epic - 6.5hrs both days! Big thanks to the R2020 crew Yasemin (who put together all the review presentations, and Alecia for being along for both full sessions and Stefan for joining us today! Check out the playbacks under the recordings section.

TOMORROW is our CLOSING CIRCLE!
This is our approximate schedule and we hope you will be able to join us:

12.12.2020 - (PST Time)
8am - 10am - Breath exercise with Stefan, Reflection Journey with Alecia, break out groups
& c
losing statements by Teachers & Mentors
10am - 10:30am - Special Guests - Allyson Grey & Alex Grey
10:30pm - 12pm - Closing Exhibition of everyone's studio and work in progress!

For the first segment have a mirror available if possible but not necessary. For the 'Closing Exhibition' we will be spotlighting each person alphabetically for about 1-2 minutes where you will be invited to show your work one at a time to the camera for everyone to see and for the record! We will be playing music throughout this segment as each person gets spotlit. If you would prefer to not be spotlit just turn off your camera :) Lets celebrate each other, dance and enjoy all the work that EVERYONE has put into this experience of Reflections 2020 🥳

See you soon! - Amanda & crew

Announcement - 12.9th :

Thank you to all who were able to join us today for this special live session with the legendary Brigid Marlin, to hear about her experience learning the Mischtechnik with Ernst Fuchs over 50 years ago! The recording is posted under our recording section. After our session I asked the crew if they wanted to stay on for a presentation I put together on Visionary Portraiture and Commissions. It is basically an overview of my portrait work, and some of others, with lots of little stories woven in.  The recording for this is also posted. I also offered to share the Business of Art talk I did during Transformation 2020 which is now under recordings.

I am looking forward to the last round of live reviews the next couple days and look forward to checking in with everyone that has submitted. I know many of you are not feeling ready, though remember to not push yourselves too much and that there will be plenty to be learned from everyone's work!

We are also looking forward to our closing session on Saturday and hope many of you will be able to make it :) More announcements on that coming soon! See you tomorrow ❤️🥳 - Amanda

Announcement - 12.4th :

Tomorrow Saturday December, 5th will be a special full deep dive with my teacher Michael Fuchs. This will be his first debut teaching online! In the first segment he will give a talk on Principles in Painting by looking at a progression of art from the early renaissance. Then he will give us a tour of his studio in Austria. After our midway break he will begin a portrait painted directly in oil and after this demo he will be open for Q&A. This is a great opportunity to see into Michael's world. He is a masterful painter and teacher whom with I had the opportunity of studying for 2 years when I was 19-20. If you aren't familiar with his work, please read his biography and look at his work on his website: https://www.artistmichaelfuchs.com/home-en

GROUP REVIEW 4 :

For the final live Group Review, Amanda will be the main mentor. To accommodate all the reviews we have extended the times and dates for this epic project to be on Thursday & Friday from 9 - 1pm PDT! Submissions will be accepted till midnight Tuesday 12.8  through this FORM

Announcement - 12.2nd :

Today the Wednesday session truly became something extensive! Lots of moving pieces that just came together as they should, and unexpected synchronicities. Stefan's offering  on the Vision Train after class was a beautiful addition and apologies for not mentioning it in our last email! We kind of planned parallel though it all worked out in the end :) I will be posting the recording from Stefan's Trip today on the Train in the Recordings section.

Many thanks to Timea for joining us today and offering up all of her wisdom through her presentations 🙏
Since our big surprise guest Brigid Marlin was not able to make it today we will be finding the next best opportune time and will let you all know!

This Saturday, Michael Fuchs will be joining us for a full day rather than half day and I will be addressing acrylic direct painting and skin tones in a separate document/video like I did with the Composition presentation.

For now I am continuing to work on my 2nd whites in casein on my portrait of Rosie Phillips Davis. I will be glazing soon and will document the process for everyone.

Announcement - Nov. 29th :

Wonderful session on Saturday! The recording is posted under 'Recordings'. I hope you all are going deeper into the consideration of glazing and experimenting with the concept. There is so much to consider and so many ways that it can go. I realize it would be helpful to have more formulas of sequencing to reach certain desired results. I see all of our work contributing to the development of these formulas - through our experimentation, documentation and note taking we are building a library of knowledge that will continue to evolve the technique and approach of "Painting with Light" in the Mischtechnik and using it's concepts in acrylic.

Alecia Sacred Heart, Stefan Lucas, Toni Taylor and I are all offering individual consultations starting this coming week for those that would like to review work deeper or have their portfolio reviewed, etc. I will have limited openings till the end of the seminar as my focus is on the program, supporting and staying up with the Facebook group and keeping up with my demo paintings! I will be offering more opportunities for individual sessions after the end of the seminar.

Alecia has created a Vocabulary Document that can be valuable to have that you can find HERE

Here is a little time-lapse of me working back into darks using Raw Umber and Permanent Violet Dark, which were the colors I used for the painting in of the drawing and the Imprimatura. After feeling finished with the darks I started working with the white to finish the first underpainting:
Here are the results after Saturdays session of glazing in acrylic Manganese Blue  of an acrylic white underpainting on a Permanent Violet Imprimatura - all in Golden Fluid Acrylics. I then started working into the 2nd underpainting with white acrylic, continuing on developing the painting and add new elements. My aim with the second underpainting is not to paint exactly what I did before but to evolve it and add to it.

Here is another time-lapse of me finishing my "surgery" and adding in some more elements before painting in skin tones glazely on Saturday:

Announcement - Nov. 27th :

The 2nd Group Reviews were so insightful and inspiring today! You can find the recordings under the Group Review section if you missed it or want to review. You can also review the other groups recordings if you like! There is so much to learn from this process:)

Tomorrow we will be going into color and glazing! I will be demonstrating on all 3 of my works in progress. The Self Portrait, my portrait of Rosie Phillips Davis and Frida. I will also be giving presentations at the beginning of each session.

  • Some years ago I put together this document that I call the 'Three Fold Rhythm' which is a way to approach the concept of the Mischtechnik. You can download a PDF of it HERE
  • For those of you interested in the Mischtechnik using egg tempera / casein and oil I have compiled a first version document (illustrations will come in the next version). Here you will find basic formulas and descriptions that can hopefully further illuminate the process. The rabbit hole of mediums is DEEP, this is just brushing the surface of my practices and experience with a little help from some friends ;) There will be more versions and expansions to come. Download the document HERE
  • Color theory in glazing etc is to be worked on still as a document to share. For now demonstrations, presentations and self experimentation will have to do 💫

Announcement - Nov. 25th :

Today was powerful, insightful and hopefully illuminating and supportive to this journey of Reflection that we are on!
Joe Bob's talk from today is linked in our recordings section, as well as the link from his talk from Transformation 2020 which is a good precursor.
So many of these painting methods and psycho-technologies are long game plays... don't expect to get them right away as this is not the point. Be an explorer and use this foundation as a tool for deeper investigation and inquiry into this grand mystery, these teaching idea's are rare to come upon and are purposefully placed.

  • Timea Tallian has offered her consent to offer everyone in Reflections 2020 access to her 2 talks on the history of the Mischtechnik and the Alchemy of Paint that were created during Transformation 2020. These are incredibly valuable resources and if you have already seen them it will be useful to revisit them again.

Announcement - Nov. 21st :

What a full day today for our second Saturday session! The work has really begun now with the base layer of the Imprimatura and the beginning of the first Underpainting! I know some of you were questioning if I would now be glazing in oil on the portrait I am doing of Rosie Phillips Davis (Akil's mother!) because I also painted with casein on it! Good catch ;) A test if you were paying attention ;) I will continue with casein on this portrait and then glaze with oil. With the self portrait I will do the underpainting with white acrylic  and glaze with acrylic.
I will also do time lapses and some little video's as I complete these Underpainting's the next few days.

(The recording to todays sessions is linked below under Recordings).

Homework:
  • Our next session on 11.25 will be with Joe Bob Merritt. He has requested that we make available his talk from Transformation 2020 for those that were not there and for anyone to revisit in preparation for his class on Wednesday. Here is the LINK to that recording.
  • Do your own Mischtechnik Cheat Sheet! Instructions below in the 'Homework' section.
  • Continue exploring your compositions, imprimatura's and under-paintings and post your explorations in the Facebook Group !

Announcement -  Nov. 20th :

We will be beginning our first session tomorrow at 8am PDT with a surprise special guided journey with Florence Ménard!
The focus will be on the self portrait, so if you are able to have your self portrait drawing with you that is good but not necessary :) The Journey will be about 30min and it will be good to have your sketchbook/ spell book with you to write down some notes after!

After the journey I will share a presentation on Imprimatura and Decalcomania then a demonstration with acrylic paint which you can join me on if you want. You can explore on a practice panel/ canvas during this or you can work on one of your main projects if you are ready, or you can just observe and explore on your own later.

Then we will have a break that will be around 30min.

The second session will be focused on the Underpainting in white acrylic and I will talk about casein and egg tempera. I will start with a presentation then move into a demo and offer a variety of tips and suggestions for developing the values in your underpainting. For this you could continue to explore on your practice panel or start working on your portrait or just observe and apply the practice later on your own time :)

Looking forward to our time together!!! -Amanda

Announcement - Nov. 14th :

For those who missed our first Saturday session:
Here are a few notes to let you know what to expect and prepare:

For the first segment we will be in a workshop with Akil Apollo Davis. The first hour will be mostly a presentation. The second hour will begin with the Spiral Down Mediation that will be about 30min and you will need about 1 square meter of space to move in. Then you will be doing an 'Anchor Drawing' and recommended materials are: "the most immediate tools" - this can be pencil on paper or any art making supplies you are feeling. Whatever is easy and fast to work with. I would advise a larger piece of paper or canvas panel, and working with any of these mediums: charcoal, pencil, oil pastels, colored pencils etc.

For the second segment I will be guiding you to draw your self portrait from a mirror, and you will do the drawing of your portrait of someone else on your own (or you can choose to do that instead of the self portrait on Saturday). I will be demonstrating drawing the self portrait on toned paper with white and black charcoal from a mirror. You will want to set yourself up with good lighting to observe your self in the mirror as well as being able to see your drawing. Note for advanced students: You can never do enough of these with different light sources, expressions and angles! Check out this video that I made for the Self Portrait class a few months ago. The Materials are the same:

Announcement - Nov. 11th :

Day 1 of Reflections 2020 on 11.11 was beautiful. So wonderful to see all your shining faces! And so much focus and dedication in the first day! It was fun to do a speed Mischtechnik in acrylic portrait of Frida Kahlo and definitely look forward to continuing it.

Below are the slides of my iPad sketches on procreate that I showed before the demo of painting Frida Kahlo. Looking at proportions and the flow of form.

And below that are the process photos of my demo (I forgot to take a photo of the charcoal sketch though - you can still see some of the markings I wiped away with the rag.) A good reminder to take photos of each stage of the journey for your future reference!

Next steps I will take on this piece is to first revisit my drawing and proportions and look closer to see what could be improved.

You can also check your proportions by downloading an app like FUSED which is a photo overlay app that you can use to overlay the original photo and your painting to see where you may be off. Or you can use photoshop etc... Photo to the right is an example of the overlay function. I lined up my painting to where it fit best which was the nose, mouth and chin. The eyes are slightly too high and the eyebrows, head and shoulders.

Next I make some of these notes with charcoal (just how I began the piece). Then I will paint those changes in a mixture of my purple and red to create a dark that harmonizes. Then I will go back to the white and start the second underpainting of refining my drawing and correcting what is off.

Check out the hour long video below to see me do surgery ;)

So what are the next steps??

Optional Homework

 Week 2

Create your own Mischtechnik cheat sheet to study the effect of different pigments as your Imprimatura and then study the effects of different colors of glaze over a variety of values of optical grey. I would advise choosing a selection of the colors that you have (no need to get any extra ones or specific ones). Make sure you choose the most diverse selection that you have and you can use mine as an example.

Step 1: Paint vertical strips of acrylic in a variety of colors, thinned down with water, achieving a nice mid-tone. This is your first coat of paint, the Imprimatura.

Step 2: With white charcoal measure out your horizontal lines that will be your glazing strips. In each square draw something that you can repeat in each square that has a variety of values of optical grey, from the lightest wash to the highest white with titanium acrylic paint thinned with water.

Step 3: Pick your glazing colors. Make sure they are also a good variety of the colors you have, ideally they are different from your Imprimatura colors. Remember that transparent pigments will be much better for glazing - notes on glazing below:
Picture
Picture
Picture
NOTES ON GLAZING

'Glazing' basically means thinning down the paint and transparently painting. When you can see through the paint this can be considered a glaze. Some will call it a wash. Opaque pigments, like cadmium yellow & red, chrome oxide green & orange and many of the earth pigments are very opaque in their nature and do not do a good job of thinning down enough to be good for glazing. Colors such as magenta, Indian yellow and manganese blue are great for glazing. The pigment is powerful and transparent.

Is a medium important when glazing?
In best case scenario it is a good idea to include a medium when creating a glaze. For acrylic this means using a transparent glazing medium such as Satin Glazing Liquid from Golden. It helps strengthen the stability of the glaze as the main paint thinner is water and once it evaporates it doesn't leave the pigment with any substantial stability. THOUGH most acrylic binders are quite strong and you can get away with glazing with just water and no extra medium.

In my live demo on 11.21, I used a Matt Medium for the Imprimatura which can give the paint more strength, grip and stability. It also offers a more rough surface rather than a slippery surface as a gloss medium does.

Week 1
1. Draw a page of each in your sketch book or separate paper. Ideal would be to use toned paper with white and black charcoal to study the values. Or just pencil on paper is great too:
  • Eyes
  • Nose
  • Mouth
  • Ears
You can also look through magazines or online and use a variety of references that you find. I thought these Z-Brush sculptural references were great so added them here.

2. Draw a Skull on toned paper with white and black charcoal.
This is an important study to do and I recommend doing a couple drawings from various perspectives.
